New Comments Policy
November 4th, 2009 by John Dilbeck
(This is a follow-up to my post about comments: Why do I accept or delete comments?)
Today, I adopted a new Comments Policy for this blog.
It’s pretty straightforward and in line with things I’ve said before. I don’t think any regular reader of this site will be surprised.
It all boils down to a few simple principles: I want to know who you are, don’t use keywords in your comment link, play nice in this sandbox, and add to the discussion.
Starting today, no matter how good your comment is, if you use keywords in the link, *poof*, it’s gone. Deleted.
Use your name. I only want to talk to real people. If you don’t like that, please leave and go elsewhere, preferably offline.
Add to the discussion. The only reason I have comments active here is because I want to hear your view on the topic. I want to share what I know and learn from others.
If you want to leave a comment here, read the policy.
And, again, I want to thank all the other people who leave thoughtful, informed comments that add to the discussions and help us all increase our knowledge and skills.
Good discussions bring a blog to life and I’m very happy that there are some great people adding to the quality of this site. Thank you.
Act on your dream!

Cool! Of course, now you’re going to have to find a place to make this permanent, otherwise your new visitors won’t know about it. I put the link at the top, and I also put a brief message over the comment area to check out the comment policy.
After all, you want to be fair and balanced, right?

Hey John, I think it’s great that you have upgraded your comment policy. I think all blogs should have one, both for the commentator and the blog owner as it helps them to maintain the quality of their blog.
As you know I have always gone by Sire, even though it isn’t my real name. I am pretty sure that you will still accept comments from me under that name as it isn’t a keyword. Even so, I will, whenever I remember that is, sign off with my real name.

Good afternoon, Sire.
I do feel a bit better now that I have the new policy in place.
What? Your name is Peter?
(You should have watched as I tried to wrap my brain around that one.)
In your case, you’re grandfathered in. Sire is fine. If I saw Peter in the link, I wouldn’t know who it was!
I’m not going to shut out my friends. I value and welcome your comments.

Good evening, Mitch.
Sorry for the delay. For some reason, your comment was held for moderation. (?)
I added the Comments Policy page to the Pages menu in the top-left column, so it has a permanent home.
You may be right that I’ll need to reference that above the comments section, and I’ll look into doing that.
Yes, I want to be fair, but I’m tired of all the junk comments and people hiding behind keywords.

Same here, my friend, which is why I finally came up with one myself. Short, but at least it’s there.

That is a good policy. You should get the keyword luv plugin.
It will keep posters and you happy. It is a good plugin and will create a win win situation.

Yep. Actually my given name is Pietro, which is Italian for Peter, but I’ve been referring to myself as Sire ever since my BBS days.

Good afternoon, Ravi.
Thanks for your comment and welcome to our discussions.
As I’ve said before, I don’t like the keyword luv plugin, so it would not be a win-win situation if I were to install it.
It’s just not going to happen.

John, it was just a suggestion
But its OK if you don’t like it. Lot of people don’t like that plug in. Its just personal choice.

Good morning, Ravi.
I understand that it was just a suggestion, and I hope I didn’t come across too harshly.
I just don’t understand why anyone would think I would want their keywords linked on my blog. I understand what they would get from it, but what is my incentive?
If someone is just looking for a keyword link, they’ll have to go elsewhere.
I’m much more interested in talking to real people, like you.
