I just published a new post to this blog and I was getting ready to tweet about it.

I went to my Twitter page and was surprised to see that Twitter Tools had already done the job for me.

I’m happy to see it working properly on this blog, again, and I hope this is going to work consistently as it used to.

Was Twitter supposed to be a social networking site? I’m not so sure.

Has it evolved into a social marketing site? Yes, at least for some of the people who participate there.

I’m not sure that we can really network in 140 characters at a time.

I don’t think a Twitter tweet replaces a blog post, but I do think that tweeting about a blog post enhances it and perhaps brings in readers who may not have seen it otherwise.

I use Twitter to remind people who follow me that I’ve written something, that something is going to happen in the town where I live, and to keep in touch with friends around the world.

I think each of us has to define for ourselves what Twitter is to be used for and then let the people who follow us decide for themselves whether we provide any value or not.

We vote by following or unfollowing others on Twitter. Over time, we find people of like mind and interests.

I should have thought to contact Alex King about Twitter Tools. Thanks for posting the issue on his site. Maybe something can be resolved soon.

I felt a little better after my rant, but overall I feel like it might have been somewhat a waste of my time. The issue is that the people who need to see it will never see it; that’s disappointing, but it is what it is.

As for Twitter Tools, I went to their site and wrote something about the issue; maybe one day I’ll hear something from them.

Seriously, I’m sorry to hear that it’s affecting your blog, too. Something flaky’s going on.

It’s interesting that postponing the publishing made it work. I wonder if that will continue to be a workaround.

Twitter Tools worked like a charm for a long time until it started going flaky the middle of last month on all my blogs.

Well, it seems you’ve messed up my blogs. As soon as you said something, mine stopped working properly. lol

Now, what I have noticed is that if I post immediately, nothing shows. But if I set a future time, even if only 5 minutes, it seems to work. Frankly, I don’t get it, but it’s a workaround for now.

I don’t know if anything you did caused Twitter Tools not to work. I doubt that it did. It seems to be some issue between Twitter Tools and Twitter.

I use it on several of my blogs and all of them stopped tweeting new posts about the same time as you noted.

Now, one seems to be working, but the others still don’t.

I have not yet been able to identify or rectify what is happening.

Going to version 2 did not cure the problem, but didn’t make it any worse, either.

Still digging into it.

If you learn what’s going on and find a solution, please let us know.

mine is still not working, i’ve not actually changed anything with it except for disabling and enabling which must have caused something to go wrong?

I just went and checked and that setting is set to “No.”

The weird thing is that I just published a new post about my new comments policy (sort of following your lead), before checking that setting. When I went to Twitter to tell the world, Twitter Tools had already done its thing and tweeted it for me.

That’s with the @reply tweets setting still set to no.

Something’s flaky somewhere, but I’m happy that it worked this time.

We’ll see about next time.

Earlier today one of my business blog posts didn’t show up, so I went in and compared it to my IJS blog, and the lower setting that said ” Exclude @reply tweets in your sidebar, digests and created blog posts?” was different. Looks like it’s supposed to be set to Yes. I don’t know why, but I then ran a test and my post showed up. Sounds goofy but hey, we’re looking at stuff, right?

Yes, indeedy, I do.

(I was pretty sure they were set right, but I went and verified it before answering.)

The only change I’ve made to this blog is updating to Twitter Tools version 2.0, but that was done this week after noticing that the older version was no longer tweeting my blog posts.

It’s still a mystery.

Twitter Tools is still creating a weekly tweets post on my JDAF blog and it’s showing my latest tweets in the right sidebar, but it’s just not tweeting when I publish a new post and that’s what I most want it to do.

And, thanks for mentioning that. It could have been easily overlooked.

I remember once when a client called me because his computer wasn’t working and I drove to his office to check it out. The first thing I did was look to see if it was plugged in to the wall socket and it wasn’t. Apparently, it had been knocked loose when someone vacuumed the carpet the night before.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him the simple solution – he was a great client – so I fiddled with things for a few minutes, got it working for him and gave him credit for the “consult.” So, instead of paying me for my time, he decided to take me to lunch and we had a great conversation. I never did tell him that his computer was just unplugged.

So, thanks for reminding me to look and see if the settings were set to “yes.”

When I publish a new blog post, Twitter Tools is not notifying Twitter.

However, when I go to the Posts section of my WordPress menu and click on the Tweet link, I can post directly to Twitter using the same Twitter Tools settings.

Strange, indeed.

I thought it might be a temporary glitch, but I posted to this blog twice today and neither one was tweeted. I had to announce both of them manually.

The thing is that I’ve come to rely on Twitter Tools and never had any problems with it in the past. It’s not working on at least three of my blogs and I’ll learn in the next couple of days if it’s working or not on three more blogs.

I did a Google search and don’t see anyone else mentioning it currently, so it may be a problem with my Twitter account. Hmmm…
