New Privacy Policy and Disclaimer pages

October 20, 2008 by John Dilbeck

On September 25, 2008, I blogged about Disclosures, Disclaimers, and Ethics of Affiliate Marketing and this is a follow-up to that post.

I’ve been looking at quite a few sites to see what they are doing about these issues and I’ve looked at some of my older sites to see what I’ve previously done.

After thinking about this for a couple of weeks, I have composed and published a new Privacy Policy and Disclaimer page for this site.

I hope theses pages clearly address the issues and are useful to anyone who reads them.

I’m still considering what I want to establish on a Disclosures page and whether or not I want to post a Comments Policy.

While I do my best to evaluate affiliate programs before recommending them, there are many things outside my control and I feel that it is necessary to establish and publish these policies.

If you are new to affiliate marketing, please pay attention to the Caveats section of the Disclaimer page.

Do you have policies posted for your site? Have I forgotten anything of importance?

Act on your dream!

  2. I added disclaimers to two of my sales sites, but I’m not going to add it to my blogs or my two business sites. I did add a contact page to my blog, though.

  4. Interesting. I have a comment policy but never really though of the others until now…just breaking into the AM market, perhaps I should.

I’ll come back with more time and go over yours :)

  6. Now that’s what I call a CYA disclaimer. LOL Good job.

Question – you collect emails when someone simply contacts you?

  8. Good morning, Dennis.

When someone contacts me via email, I keep a copy of that message until the issue is resolved, and that may take several messages back and forth.

Once the issue is resolved, I delete all the email messages.

I do not add anyone to a mailing list unless they specifically give permission to do that, and I’m moving all my mailing lists over to Aweber or Site Build It as I have the time to do so.

In order to get on a mailing list, a person has to fill in a form and then click on the confirmation link that Aweber or Sitesell sends them. This is called a double opt-in system and is the only way to get on a mailing list from my business. Every message sent on these mailing lists contains a link at the bottom to unsubscribe from the list, and those links work.

Do you think there needs to be a clarification on my policy about this?

  10. Good morning, Mitch.

Making a decision about policies for a particular site can be difficult. After I realized that this was going to become one of three main contact points for my business, I decided that I needed to publish some policies and disclaimers so that everyone (who reads them) will be on the same page, so to speak.

I’m going to be closing most of my websites and blogs over the coming months and I want to add a level of transparency to what I’m doing that has not been there, before.

Another thing that I’ve been thinking about is all the lies and hype surrounding affiliate marketing (and many other forms of online marketing) and I want to clearly establish that I’m not part of this Get Rich Quick crowd. I want to work with people willing to put forth the effort and investment to build a real business and I want to steer the others away from my business.

Another reason for having a privacy policy is because it is required by Google if you show Adsense ads on a site. You can read about the new terms and conditions on the Google Adsense blog. This sparked a flurry of comments on their Google Adsense Help group.

That’s the first thing that got me to thinking about this, but it took a long time to get it done as Mom needed more and more care this year. Honestly, I forgot about it until about a month ago, when I turned my attention to trying to sort out my responsibilities. I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize my Adsense account.

I’m still trying to decide exactly how transparent I need to be in these areas.

    Act on your dream!

  18. Yeah, now that you mention it I do remember something about the Privacy policy. I included something in my disclaimer on the two sites about that, but maybe I need to make that a part of information I have on the rest of my sites that have Adsense also. Man, these people and their rules.
