How to build a tribe
Filed under: Blogs, Business Networking, Communities, Social Networking, Squidoo Lenses
Seth Godin wrote a very interesting article in the SquidBlog, entitled Squidoo two point oh! that talks about where Squidoo has come from and gives some hints about where it’s heading.
That isn’t the part of the article that caught my attention, however.
Towards the bottom of the article is a section called How to build a tribe and it describes succinctly some of what I’ve been trying to do over the last few months.
I’m going to take the liberty to quote from this section, and I heartily recommend that you go and read Squidoo two point oh!
Here’s what Seth said about building a tribe:
How to Build a Tribe
If you want a tribe, you need to earn one. You earn one by being the best in the world at what you do, by sharing generously, by being clear and clean and transparent and easy to work with. The masterpiece lenses on Squidoo have organically generated a following. You can too.
The only way we can make that happen, all of it, is to be open, to give you tools and to trust you. The current generation of the best Squidoo pages–the ones that rank high, get traffic and generate income–are the sort of thing that you want to visit, follow, and be part of.
It’s not particularly difficult to imagine the benefits that you’ll get when you have a tribe of people who like each other and trust you. When you have a blog and a Squidoo lens and a Facebook group and a network of people waiting to hear from you. That’s your tribe. You–and your ideas–are the glue, the magnetic attraction, the purpose. Now it’s time to sync them all up.
So that’s where we are, and that’s where we’re going.
If you run a small business or a charity or work on a major brand or are a stay at home mom, your entire world changes once you have a tribe to lead. A group of people who want to interact with each other and with you to discover new ideas and to contribute what they know.
I’m doing my best to follow this model and look forward to seeing how it all comes together over time.
Thanks for the mental image of building a tribe, Seth.

What other webhosting company can show results like SiteSell can?
Filed under: Sitesell and Site Build It, Webhosting, Websites
I was reading the members-only SiteSell forums and read Ken Evoy’s announcement of a revised results page showing hundreds of websites created with Site Build It!
Not only can SiteSell show hundreds of successful websites, they’re actually finding it more difficult to revise the page.
Why? Because there aren’t enough successful sites?
Hardly!
It’s because there are so many successful sites that they are finding it difficult to pick only the best for the results page.
A few years ago, when there were only about 60,000,000 active websites, an SBI webmaster could make the results page even if their site was only in the top 3% of all sites on the Internet.
Now, with the number of active websites somewhere between 100,000,000 and 160,000,000, you have to rank in the top 1% of all those sites to be listed on the Site Build It! results page.
What other webhosting company do you know of that shows hundreds of websites that rank in the Top 1% of all sites on the entire Internet? The really important thing is that the vast majority of those sites were created by normal, non-technical people who wanted to build a successful online business, and, in many cases, the sites they built are outperforming websites created by experts.
These are normal people, some of them probably a lot like you, who have followed the Site Build It! Action Guide and have built high-traffic websites in only a year or two that have risen to the top of the heap. Most of them knew little or nothing about building an online business before they subscribed to Site Build It.
If they can do it, why can’t you?
Seriously.

Random Neurons Firing becomes 21st Century Affiliate Marketing
Several months ago, I created a blog called Random Neurons Firing at WordPress.com in order to test the latest version of their blogging software without having to keep updating the software all the time.
As you may know, I earn my living from affiliate marketing and that’s my main interest these days, so I started writing about the subject at Random Neurons Firing.
A few days ago, I logged into the dashboard to write a new post and there was a message that WordPress was concerned about the contents of my blog. So, I used the contact form to learn what concerned them.
When one of their people contacted me, he told me that I was violating their terms of service by blogging about affiliate marketing.
I wasn’t aware that commercial postings weren’t allowed on blogs hosted by WordPress.com, but that’s the case.
So, I exported all the postings and deleted all that were commercial in nature.
In the future, I’ll be posting about non-commercial topics on that blog.
I had registered 21stCenturyAffiliateMarketing.com some time back, but had never done anything with it, so yesterday, I set up a new blog called 21st Century Affiliate Marketing on this domain and imported the postings from Random Neurons Firing into it.
In the future, I’ll be posting news and views about affiliate marketing on this blog.
Of course, this means more work and I’m not sure if it will really be worth it.
The only way to find out is to try it and see.
The main reason I’ll continue writing to this blog in addition to John Dilbeck And Friends is to see if more people will comment because you won’t have to register here, and you do have to register there.
Any thoughts?
